Gabriola Island Singers

The Gabriola Island Singers began as a night school course in 1976 under the direction of Aileen Adam with Hugh Brown as the accompanist.  Alfred Kristiansen conducted for a few years, followed by Gail Lund from 1983 to 2022. As of September 2022, our Director/Accompanist is Steve Smith.

We are an un-auditioned, very inclusive community choir of up to 50 voices. We present annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, as well as performing at other Island functions such as Remembrance Day and a Carol Sing Along at the Library.

In 2017 our musical highlight was being invited to perform our award-winning songs at the 150th Canada Day citizenship ceremony at Government House in Victoria, honouring and welcoming 150 of Canada’s newest citizens. On November 11, 2017, we organized a concert, sing-a-long and tea dance for our veterans to commemorate the anniversary of Vimy Ridge.

Our repertoire is eclectic – classical to pop, and each concert features some music written or arranged by talented Gabriolan musicians. We aim to make our rehearsals challenging but fun!
