Now under the directorship of Scott Knight, the Gabriola Island Singers began as a night school course in 1976 led by Aileen Adam with Hugh Brown as the accompanist. Alfred Kristiansen then took the reins, followed by Gail Lund from 1983 to 2022. Steve Smith served as our director/accompanist for one year, after Gail died.
One of our musical highlights was performing one of Gail’s award-winning songs at the 2017 Canada Day citizenship ceremony at Government House in Victoria. There we welcomed 150 of Canada’s newest citizens by singing one of three songs written by Gail for the sesquicentennial.
While we were forced into hiatus by both COVID and the loss of our beloved director, we are now back to full strength under Scott’s direction. Our choir is reinvigorated, and our rehearsals are a joy to attend.
Scott has more than 30 years of professional experience working with singers from classical voice, opera, music theatre, pop, and other genres. He’s worked as a musical director and pianist with most major theatre companies in Vancouver, as well as with Vancouver Opera, and has coached ensembles, as well as singers of all levels.
An un-auditioned, inclusive community choir of up to 50 voices, GIS presents annual winter and spring concerts, and performs at other Island functions including Remembrance Day and a carol singalong at the library.
Our repertoire is eclectic; ranging from classical to pop, Celtic to jazz, contemporary to spiritual. We aim to make our rehearsals challenging but fun!
Practices are Wednesday night 6:30 – 8:30 at the Community Hall. If you love to sing, come and try us out to see if we are the right fit for you.
