Come Sing With Us!

Choirs and singers are often looking for opportunities to connect – especially at the beginning of a new term. Sometimes a choir director is looking for specific voices (i.e. alto, bass, etc.) to round out the sound in the choir.  Sometimes, it is a matter of directors wanting to expand the size of the group.

This page provides the opportunity for singers and choirs to find each other.  Check back often for updated information.  The following are posts for August/September 2025.

A Cappella Plus

A Cappella Plus invites new singers for the choral season ahead.  While all voices are invited, tenors and basses would be especially welcomed! Under the direction of Patricia Plumley, the choir rehearses on Thursday evening (7-9 pm) at Wellington High School on Departure Bay Rd.

They present four concerts each year as well as participate in community choral events and local outreach. Concerts are held late fall and late spring in Nanaimo and Parksville.  Their repertoire is varied ranging from folk/pop/rock to contemporary to classical.  They love it all and are committed to celebrating the joy of song.

Camerata Singers

Camerata Singers is a vibrant and enthusiastic community choir that sings a wide range of musical genres, including folk, contemporary choral, jazz, classical, spiritual, and pop. Each year we have a Christmas concert, and a spring concert in May based around a theme, often featuring guest performers from the community.

Camerata welcomes new members who love to sing and who want to learn more about music. Practices are held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30. New members should be comfortable reading along with choral music (rehearsal tracks are also provided). We are happy to have you join us for up to three practices at the beginning of each term (September and January) to see if we’re a good fit! No audition required.

Gabriola Island Singers

The most important thing is to have fun! That’s the Prime Directive for the Gabriola Island Singers. Now in our 40th year, GIS is an un-auditioned, inclusive community choir of up to 50 voices. Our repertoire is eclectic; ranging from classical to pop, Celtic to jazz, contemporary to spiritual.

Musical Director, Scott Knight aims to make our rehearsals challenging but fun, bringing more than 30 years of professional experience working with singers from classical voice, opera, music theatre, pop, and other genres to that effort. Having worked as a musical director and pianist with Vancouver Opera and most major Vancouver theatre companies, Scott has coached ensembles as well as singers of all levels, and has a way about him that entices everyone to do their best in the midst of rehearsals full of laughter.

We present annual winter and spring concerts, and perform at other Island functions including Remembrance Day and a carol singalong at the library.Practices are Wednesday night 6:30 – 8:30 at the Community Hall. If you love to sing for the sheer joy of singing, come and try us out to see if we are the right fit for you.

Island Bel Canto Singers

Island Bel Canto Singers is an adult choir that attracts sopranos and altos who love to explore music written for the treble voice. We are a multi-generational ensemble with singers from age 17 – 70 (and better!). This season is an All-Canadian Celebration of composers such as Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Susan Aglukark and Connie Kaldor – to name a few. More information can be found on ‘Our 2025-2026 Season’ page. Rehearsals are held on Mondays between 6:30 and 9:00 pm at Brechin United Church.

If you are interested to wave Canada’s flag – musically-speaking – please consider attending a trial rehearsal. We start on Monday, September 8th with artistic director, Fiona Blackburn, and collaborative pianist, Stefanie Unger. Hope to see you then!

Malaspina Choir

Malaspina Choir has produced high quality concerts of time-honoured masterworks since 1970. We are your home, if you want to sing the celebrated music of composers such as Handel, Mozart and Brahms; plus, their modern counterparts, Benjamin Britten and Karl Jenkins, for example. These large-scale works are typically performed with orchestra and guest soloists. We also enjoy other diverse repertoire – from early music to beloved Canadian folksongs, and everything in between.

Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings (6:30 – 9:00 pm) at St. Andrew’s United Church. They are led by director, Fiona Blackburn, and collaborative pianist, Jenny Vincent. Our website has lots of information. See this page: Sing with Us.

The Island Consort Chamber Choir

The Island Consort Chamber Choir, a 20-voice ensemble of really friendly folks, directed by Bruce Farquharson invites singers with musical skills and an interest in a broad spectrum of “classical” repertoire to audition.  We are especially looking for low basses, tenors and 2nd altos.

We rehearse weekly, Mondays 7:00 – 9:00 in downtown Nanaimo and perform twice annually, late fall and mid-spring (with a long summer layoff).  Contact us either through our website at www.islandconsort.ca.

The Sinclair Singers, under the direction of Sharon Sinclair, invites new singers to audition! This SATB choir focuses on encouraging young adults who have some choral or singing experience to join. The choir sings a wide variety of genres from classical to contemporary and much of their repertoire is sung a cappella. They work to prepare their music to a high standard of choral singing.

The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings. They enjoy preparing for and performing two concerts each year, one in December and one in May. For more information or to request an audition, please contact Sharon Sinclair –  250-756-9993.

Tidesmen A Cappella Chorus

The Tidesmen strive for excellence in four-part a cappella harmony in a fun, challenging, and supportive environment, while making a tangible, positive contribution to our community.

Tidesmen A Cappella Chorus welcomes visitors to our regular practice on a no commitment basis. And, of course, we always welcome new members, so if after a few visits – or even after one! – you decide you would like to join us, we will help you confirm which vocal range best suits your voice.

You’ll be assigned to one of our four-part Sections under the guidance of a Section Leader, and you’ll have full access to our Musical Score Library and digital Learning Tracks. While useful, there is no requirement to read music; many of our members learn their part by listening to our learning tracks.

There is a modest annual membership fee and members are encouraged to also join the Barbershop Harmony Society, an international organization supporting and promoting four-part a cappella harmony.

The most frequent comment we hear from men who join us is: “I wish I had started years ago!” www.tidesmen.com For more information, contact Peter Makula at makula@kos.net
